Mass Effect 2

So, I did a really bad thing and bought Mass Effect 2… new… the day it came out. *waves hands* I know, I know, I know, you don’t have to say it. ‘What was I thinking?’ I’m not rich, I shouldn’t spend money on frivilous things, etc, etc. But you know what? I don’t care. This was an excellent purchase and I am happy to have it, own it, (have access to the Cerberus downloadable content I couldn’t get if I had rented it) and even more, I’m happy to be PLAYING it! I’ve only played one night and this game is awesome!

Can't they make the lighting a little better???
I got my Xbox 360 around August (I’d have to check my Live transactions to be sure) and Mass Effect was one of the first games I bought. I’d heard a lot about it, and it looked pretty (yes, pretty is an imporant feature when choosing a game) so I figured ‘why not?’ First off, when playing this game I loved that you could pick the gender of your character and it actually referenced. It wasn’t one of those things where they just cover up the male character name with the female and what not, while you can clearly tell at times that the game was designed for a male lead, Jennifer Hale’s voice acting really does give you the feeling that while this is a strong woman who can put down with the rest of the guys, she is still a woman and has a bit of a softer side. Of course I could just be reading into it. I also loved that you could design how your character looks and while I applaud the ‘let’s fine tune every little aspect’ I was thankful it wasn’t AS detailed as Oblivion, where I kept getting to the poing that my charcters were white-blue and illuminated from the inside- in Mass Effect it’s easy to shift back a bit and fix something that doesn’t look normal. I only wish the lighting in the creation screen was a bit better that you could actually see how she looks under the lighting a good portion of the game has. My Shepherd came out a little wonky. Which brings me to the first thing I LOVED about Mass Effect 2; you can change your characters appearance!!!!! Now, while they don’t let you gender bend and come back as a guy, you do get a chance to radically change your character. This was really good because aside from how her neck, chin, lip area was just off and she looked rather duckish to me, her hair (which I liked when I gave it to her) by the end of the game was driving me nuts.

Normandy approaching the Citadel
in the game to give it depth from advertistments, news casts to being able to walk past a couple of people talking and actually listen to them hold a full conversation (until it repeats itself- poor guy is never going to get into Afterlife.). And I did mention the pretty graphics right? I mean the detail is amazing. Ok so you still have glitch issues, like peoples curved fingers going through flat datapads (thank you Mordin) and you have to kinda gloss over the lips/dialouge matching perfectly (it’s good if you don’t focus on it, if you do it’ll drive you nuts). BUT it’s still spectacular to look at. I will admit that sometimes, if I move to quickly (I’m going to try to adjust the camera speed to help) I do get a little dizzy, but I just love it when the action cuts to a video and that makes up for any moments of ‘whoa!dizzy’ I might have. I could totally just watch the videos they’re so nice. Screw the game give me more cut scenes. With the detailed cities and ships (there’s a mens and womens room on the Normandy), very detailed people (the dialouge cuts are really nice in ME2, no more just standing and talking the camera changes angles and people move around) the game is just wonderful to look at.
To go on even more about the awesomeness of this game, one of my favorite things; beyond the way it looks, the story, the characters, even the impressive voice casting. Beyond all that I love the fact that it’s an RPG-shooter. AND it’s not a first-person RPG-shooter, it’s an over-the-shoulder shooter. For me, as much as I love Halo and all the other first-person shooters (I used to be pretty good at Half Life) I have this constant ‘what pretty shoes you have’ dilema where I constantly will find myself facing a persons shoes instead of their torso- alternatly if I don’t have the ‘pretty shoe’ dilema I run into the ‘that cloud is shaped like a bunny… with a gun… shooting me in the-’. With the over the shoulder style it’s much easier (for me at least) to aim and shoot at something other than the floor instead of jumping wildly (not that you can in this game)- which I think isn’t as much people trying to not get hit as much as it’s the only way they can make sure that when their orientation gets screwed they can still see the map (Then there’s me, I jump and normally end up jumping off the platform to my death.)
Anyhow, I can’t wait to finish off the game this week, I’ve already informed my Guild I’ll be MIA for a while. At least it’s easier to pause the game and reply to an RP post on my 360 than it is with WOW open.
